General Information for Candidates
Catchment and Location
Beckley School serves a cluster of villages in the district of South Oxfordshire; these include Beckley, Elsfield, Forest Hill, Horton-cum-Studley and Stanton St John. We also attract children from parts of Oxford City. Beckley itself is about five miles north-east of Oxford on a hill overlooking Otmoor nature reserve. Our school is on a quiet lane and is surrounded by picturesque countryside.
Founded by the Church of England, Beckley School is a Voluntary Controlled school. For most purposes, a Controlled school operates under very similar rules to those of County schools. Admissions are through the local authority – in this case Oxfordshire County Council – and we are an inclusive school which fully reflects our community with children of all faith traditions, cultures and abilities. There are two Foundation Governors on the Governing Body.
People and Resources
People are our greatest assets. There are usually about 125 children on the school roll, organised in five classes from Early Years Foundation to Year Six. Staff are mutually supportive, working as team with a dynamic mix of experienced teachers, others newer to the profession, plus experienced TAs, and office staff for Finance and Administration. The school is committed to continuing professional development for all. We benefit from active supportive parents, volunteers from the community, external assistance from the local authority and other specialist agencies if required. We run a popular well-attended After-School club. School buildings include the original Victorian Hall, a small library and seven classrooms, the last two added eight years ago. There are HD TV’s in all classrooms; laptops and iPads are shared throughout the school. Outdoors, we have a field, known as ‘The Pitch’, with three huge and spectacular trees to climb and probably the best views in the village, tarmac playgrounds, all-weather designated area for the youngest children, vegetable beds, quiet garden and some parking.
